It’s not by accident that you end up with a beautifully decorated home. While decorating a home is very individual and can vary greatly, it’s important to be sensible.

Here are some ways to decorate yours.

1. Let Your Walls Talk

Stop avoiding bold colours for your home decor. Put away the neutrals. Choose reds, purples, and beautiful blues as accents for your walls. Welcome your guests to your home with a beautiful door knocker and an elaborately designed toran.

2. Give Green Some Room

What if you don’t have the space to grow a garden? Bring your green thumb indoors. Indoor plants such as peace lilies, peace lilies, palms and succulents are great. Please don’t keep them only in the living room. You can also add some to the bathroom, bedroom or study. They will not only beautify the space but also keep it fresh.

3. Bright Fabrics are the Stars

Spread a bit of India in your home decor. Upholstery and furnishings that are Indian will look great in your home. Chanderi or Ikat, Block prints, Leheriya—your choices are virtually limitless. Silk can be used to accent cushions. Mirrorwork, brocade, and mirrors are great additions. Use your old Banarasi Sarees as drapes. Colourful runners and drapes are a great way to make a statement.

4. Negative Space Can Spread Attention

All of us are guilty. We all have a collection of gifts we don’t use, impulse purchases and souvenirs from countless trips. But that doesn’t mean we need to put them all on display in our living room. Attention-worthy displays are not just about the things that they are made of but also about the empty spaces you leave between them. Spacing out your decor elements is called negative space. Plants and books can help you break up the monotony in your linear arrangements. Also, change the theme.

5. Go All Antique

Antique decor can give a room a lot of character. You might have a mirror from your grandmother or a stool from Rajasthan that your sister brought back from her trip. Create a small display of brass items on a tray and place it on your coffee table. These beautiful, worn-looking brass pieces will give your home a touch of sophistication and history. They also speak volumes about our rich culture.

6. Your Space Can Be Made Creative

You may be struggling with an oversized furniture item (a sofa, for example). You don’t have to compromise on your decor because you cannot let go of an oversized furniture piece (a couch, for example). Keep the piece, and design your decor around it. You can invest in nesting side tables if you don’t have enough space to fit a coffee table of a reasonable size. They can be brought out when needed.

7. Let there be light!

You will notice a difference in the atmosphere when you replace your scented reeds and candles with vintage lamps. For the same effect, you can add a few droplets of essential oil to oil in diyas. Use glass lanterns of different colours for a more Arabic look. Last but not least, you can invest in a statement-making chandelier that will leave your guests in awe!
