It’s fine to feel like you have to start over because home decor is always changing. We all have to start somewhere, whether this is your first time decorating your home or you’re just updating your space. You’re at the right place. You’ll find tips, tricks and inspiration in our Learning Center for your home decor. No matter how large or small your home is, decorating it can be a difficult task. It can be challenging, but it’s also fun. And if you do it step by step, your room will look great without costing a fortune!

Home Decorating for Beginners: 9 Steps

1. Select Your Decor Style

First, you will need to decide on your style of home decor. There are many styles to choose from, including traditional, farmhouse, modern, minimalistic and contemporary. The list is endless! This will be your most difficult decision. Consider your personality and interests. You might prefer a minimalistic style if you like simple lines and are drawn to them. You might choose a Bohemian look if you love bright colours and patterns.

Choose something that makes you smile every time you look at it. It is your home, so decorate it however you like!

2. Make a Realistic Plan

Next, you will need to make a plan. Do you need to decorate an entire house from scratch or just a few rooms? Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. Sit down and make a plan.

Start with your bedroom, as it is the most personal room in your home. Start with your bedroom. It is one of your most personal spaces in the house, and you’ll spend a great deal of time there. Consider starting in the living room. This is another place where you’ll spend a lot of time with your family. You will get the rest!

3. Choose a Color Palette

You’ve already decided on the style of your home, so you should also choose a colour scheme for your room. Your colour scheme should match the style of decor you’re going for. Boho is characterized by jewel tones such as sapphire and ruby. The minimalistic style uses white, black and neutral colours. When creating a colour scheme, it is best to decide whether you want warm or cool colours in your room. Warm tones include oranges and yellows, while cool tones tend to lean more towards blues and silvers.

You can use the same colour palette throughout your home, or you can change it by room. You can create the perfect colour palette by using the 60-30-10 Rule. If you haven’t heard about the 60-30-10 Rule, we’ll tell you about it. This is a home decor classic that will help you create the perfect colour palette for your space.

The split is as follows: 60% of the room should be your dominant colour. This can be achieved by using your wall colour (accent walls are an exception) or large decor items such as your couch or rug. The secondary colour should make up 30% of the room. The colour chosen should be sufficiently different from the dominant colour but still complement it. The colour can also be used on other pieces of furniture, linens, curtains, and even fabric. Accent colour should cover the last 10% of a room. You can use this colour to throw pillows or blankets, frame art, and other small trinkets in your room.

4. Get Advice from the Experts

It’s never a bad idea to give a little advice. You can find a lot of Instagram influencers and home decor bloggers. There’s nothing more inspiring and motivating than seeing how others decorate their homes.

It can be not easy to choose the right Instagram profile for your home decor. There are many. What is your style? Which ones are budget-friendly? These decor bloggers will answer all your questions!

5. You can have it flow from room to room

This step is also part of choosing an interior design. It’s not a good idea to have a farmhouse-style living room and a contrasting contemporary-style kitchen. They won’t go together. If that’s your true desire, who are we? We suggest that you let your style of decor flow through your home. It will make more sense!

Start with the larger pieces, as this will help you find all the smaller pieces. Start with the biggest pieces in each space. After you have a sofa for the living room, bed frames for your bedroom and a table for the dining room, everything else starts to fall into place.

6. Choose Your Essential Pieces

Decorate your room with large or statement pieces. Before you add any other pieces of decor, place your bed, sofa and dining table first. You will be able to know exactly where to place each piece as you decorate. You can place a plant in your living room before you add your wall art. This will ensure that it doesn’t interfere with your decor later.

Don’t cut corners on these items; they will be the most noticeable items in your room. Do your research and find the right sofa or dining table for your home. You don’t want to have to replace it every year.

7. Add Some Wall Art

It’s impossible to create a more personal home than by adding your photos. You’re probably familiar with our Learning Center, where we offer a lot of ideas for framing. You can frame family photos, wedding pictures, pet photos or your favourite artwork. You’ll smile each time you see the images you hang of things that are important to you. We make framing easy: upload your photos to our website, choose the size that works with your wall space and design your frame!

Frames are a great addition to any space, whether you’re looking to create a gallery wall for your living room or add a few to your nightstand.

8. Don’t forget to add your personal touch

We always say to do whatever you think looks best in your house. Home decor is a personal choice. You can decorate each room differently or stick to a certain style. We only suggest adding your personal touch.

It’s not a good idea to copy someone else’s house exactly (or perhaps you do—as we said, you can do what you want! ). Try to give your home a personal touch. You could use photos, like we did, scented candles, family heirlooms, or even your child’s artwork. These things will make your home more personal and unique.

9. Let it Evolve Overtime

After adding your essentials, let your decor evolve. You can change your decor, especially your smaller pieces, according to your mood, the holiday or your interests. Do not be afraid to begin your gallery wall and then add to it later. Start with the basics, like the frames, and then add to it as your family or interests grow.

As we have mentioned, after you’ve set up the large pieces, the rest of your room will fall into place. Consider adding a potted flower to the area near your window if you notice it is a bit bare. You may have all the essentials in your bathroom, like toilet paper, hand towels and bath towels. But does it feel like a spa at home? Add a few more pieces to make it feel like a spa.
